The General Fund

As is the case for many nonprofit organizations, the General Fund supports daily as well as special activities of the Society, including expenses involved in planning and  putting on events such as our annual conference. The annual conference provides education in the latest technical and scientific methods in the field of apiculture. At times, the organization also may hold workshops and short courses relative to honey bees and related subjects for beekeepers and the general public. The Research Fund

The Research Fund is used in providing support to organizations doing such research as that of the Honey Bee Health Coalition. Our objective is “to provide for and promote scientific research in the field of apiculture, to disseminate such research to the public, and to provide a greater appreciation for beekeeping as a hobby and as an important industry.” As further stated in our bylaws: No substantial part of the activities of the Society shall consist of carrying on of propaganda, or attempt to influence legislation, nor shall this corporation participate in, or intervene (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of any candidate for political office. For this reason, the Society will not fund any organization that has a political view. The James Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund

On October 18, 2018, we said goodbye to a long-time member of WAS, our Washington board director and past president, James Smith. Jim was a design engineer for 25 years and had been a member of WAS since 2010. He was involved in many organizations: World in Motion, which teaches children science and engineering; engineering organizations – SAE and ASME; beekeeping organizations – Western Apicultural Society, Pierce County Beekeepers Association, and Washington State Beekeepers Association. Jim also served on St. Martin University’s engineering board.

Jim was a lifetime learner, teacher, and mentor. In view of this, WAS has established this scholarship fund in his honor.

Scholarship funds will be used to cover registration costs for students who wouldn’t otherwise have the resources to attend a WAS conference so that they may learn more about one of Jim’s passions: BEES!
